You’ve
heard the phrase “they don’t build them like they used
to.”? Well, when this home was built in 1952 it was far, far
superior to anything that was being built even then! Commercial
specifications… from the size of the pipes in the plumbing
to a superior grade of concrete…
This
is one of Fort Smith’s most gracious homes… if not the
most gracious. Well set back from the road with a circle drive wide
enough for two cars, four large white columns frame a generous brick
paved veranda.
All
the flooring in this home (except, of course, the baths) are hardwood…the
interesting thing about that is… they are beautiful, ¾
inch thick… and to the Ney’s… sub flooring! oh,
well… the floors have been polished, a breakfast room added,
kitchen redone, the upstairs claimed and the basement level reclaimed…all
the while carefully maintaining the original integrity of this home,
complete to the servant’s summoning bells.
Main
Level:
Entry:
23 x 13. Cream painted walls with wainscoting detail.
Living
room/Dining room: 26 x 19. Originally, just the living
room, but, again, another time…there is a fireplace at the
far end with marble surround and gas logs. Two Framburg chandeliers
are the crowning touches to this room.
Family
room: 24 x 16. This was the formal dining room (and still
could be), but it serves grownups well as a place to watch TV. Two
French doors open from this room to the screened-in porch. (21 x
18).
Kitchen:
8 x 13. (not the largest room, but remember, they had servants
who cooked and served…this room was not nearly as important
then as it is now) The current owners have worked hard to include
every amenity here. Thick granite counter tops, a center work island
with a vegetable sink, Viking range with 6 burners and a griddle,
stainless built-in refrigerator, microwave, warming oven, separate
ice maker and a trash compactor. Everything.
Breakfast
room: 9.3 x 14.7. An important addition for morning coffee.
Powder
room: with the original tile flooring and the sweetest
sink I’ve ever seen!
Utility
room: 15 x 10.5. With lockers for school books, and the
original sink taken from the butler’s pantry and way too good
to toss….especially since it housed the first garbage disposal
(called an electric sink), in Fort Smith.
Now,
for the north wing…
Study:
18 x 10. Padded fabric, dark wooden wainscoting, built-in
desk with bookshelves around the room, window seat with concealed
filling cabinets, and a magnificent wet bar….with a buzzer
to call the kitchen for snacks!
The
powder room across the hall has the original fixtures…with
updated wallpaper. Beautifully done.
The
two bedrooms on the north side of the house share a bath that also
features the original fixtures… right down to the glass shower
surround.
Bedroom
(1): 17 x 16
Bedroom (2): 17 x 13.
Master
Suite: The bedroom is 20 x 17. The master bath is 15.5 x 13 and features heated
marble flooring, separate pedestal sinks, extraordinarily large
walk-in shower with several shower heads (including a “rain”
head). Whirlpool tub and a fireplace with gas logs…. You will
never be cold in this room!
Master closet: 17 x 12. Compartmentalized with doors….several
are cedar lined.
Second
Level:
At
one time there was nothing here but a large closet, access to the
upper deck and floored storage. However… all has been changed…
Family
room: 19 x 25. Hardwood flooring, beamed ceiling, dormer
windows, built-in big screen TV.
Upstairs
kitchen: 11 x 8.5. Small refrigerator, microwave oven and
a sink. Access to the floored attic (36 x 36) is through this room.
Powder
room.
Computer
area: 15 x 12.4 with built-in book shelves and a dormer
window with a window seat.
Bedroom
(4): 19 x 20. Wooden ceiling, private bath with both tub
and shower, plus a walk-in closet (12.8 x 12.5)
Basement
Level:
This
area features ceramic tile flooring, a game room (40 x 27.6) with
an exercise area and a hobby room. There is also a full bath and
access to more storage (42 x 40).
The
mechanical room is also on this level.
There
is a heated 3 car garage ( 38 x 24.7) with an apartment above. The
apartment has its own security system…entrance… a full
kitchen, breakfast area, living room, bedroom and full bath. 941
square feet of privacy!
All
this is sited on over 6 acres...
in the middle of Fort Smith.
A private park.
